Sunflower is designed to promote activity-based learning in the afterschool program through a variety of group science and environmental education investigations and experiments. Sunflower activity books are available in Spanish: "Girasol." The curriculum is fully aligned with the National Science Education Standards (NSES).

This guide is designed to help the afterschool leader prepare for, organize, conduct and evaluate each activity in the Sunflower Air Unit. The guide provides lesson plans for each activity, including the approximate amount of time each activity is likely to take, and also suggests extension and follow-up activities.

In addition, the leader’s guide contains worksheets that are used in conjunction with specific activities. The worksheets provided for duplication are designed to help children collect and organize data. The leader’s guide also includes evaluation activities designed to assess what children have learned as a result of using Sunflower.
