Sunflower is designed to promote activity-based learning in the bilingual classroom through a variety of group science and environmental education investigations and experiments. Sunflower activity books are available in English and Spanish, in order to meet curriculum needs in a variety of bilingual and regular education programs. The curriculum is fully aligned with the National Science Education Standards (NSES).

This guide is designed to help the teacher prepare for, organize, conduct and evaluate each activity in the Sunflower Trash Unit. The guide provides lesson plans for each activity, including the approximate amount of time each activity is likely to take, and also suggests extension and follow-up activities.

In addition, the leader’s guide contains worksheets that are used in conjunction with specific activities. The worksheets are designed to help students collect and organize data and should be duplicated by the teacher/leader for children. The Leader’s guide also includes evaluation activities designed to assess what children have learned as a result of using Sunflower.
